Invitation to a delight in nature, festivities, food, culture and community

The world is changing. Before we know, everything we see now will be different. We are all very busy in the city. Weekends are the time when give ourselves excuse to explore what's going on "inside the city". Somehow we are bound in it. Many of us don't know that only about 90 minutes away from downtown, there is another face of Shanghai. You can see the rolling fields here, unblocked blue sky, and most importantly — a community of people who are dedicated to live harmonious lives with nature, animals and humans. They live near the farms but come from many walks of life. These agro-adventurers are highly educated, some expats, some adventurers, some for healings, some embarking on a new path - all are humans. Humans with love, compassion and kindness. We invite you to come meet us. See how the air tastes in this area, listen to the birds, touch the wide fields, look at the sky — play in the mud if you'd like. We invite you to come celebrate with us in a First-time-ever unique event commemorating Bengali New Year.

Bengal is a region of South Asia, consists of Bangladesh and parts of India. In that region people have their own calendar. The first day of that calendar is counted from first day of Summer months. It's a hot region of the earth — so summer comes early in there. Traditionally the day starts at the first light of dawn. As soon as we see the first glimpse of sunrise on that day, musician gathered under the oldest tree in the park will start singing. That's how they welcome the New Year.

People start gathering in the park where there's fair, decorations, marketplace, games, music and dance. It's a melting pot of color and euphoria. After the first segment of the celebration is done, people start to walk a peace parade. Dressed in bright and colorful garment, wearing garland, headpiece, bracelets made of flowers. Girls and women wearing Mehndi — temporary henna tattoo. Some chooses to wear face paints. All in all in every way we see the celebration. The parade procession walks along major streets and stops at a landmark. Along the way there are innumerable choices of street food and drinks. The procession carries huge masks, art structures, musical instrument. After it reaches its destination people get ready for lunch!

Bengali cuisine consists of a lot fish. Traditionally fried fish, bharta — type of vegetarian Pâté, and soaked rice are eaten for lunch. But Bengal, being part of larger Sub-continental Indian region, there's a large variety of spicy dishes. I will take a moment to tell you that popular generalization of every dish being called curry is a big misconception. It's like calling 包子、饺子、粽子、馄饨 the same thing! In fact, in Indian culture there is no dish called curry! Do you know what they are called? Come over to our event, we'll tell you more.

For our unique food festival, we will bring some of the elements from that region. You will be greeted full Indian style, with a Bindi — a small dot on forehead, mala — garland made of flowers, and laddu — the best treat of all sweet treats. Then you will explore our community where we will offer you street food from India and masala chai. We will dress your hands will Mehndi, and face paint if you'd like.

Right before lunch we will take you on a field trip — literally. You will walk the rice fields of Yungu (云谷) Community, the community that we belong to. After that you will come back to a full vegetarian feast for lunch. Wait — there will also be pure vegan dishes at the table. Why vegetarian? Well, that's one of the ways we are trying to make a better change to the world, and to our health. Give it a try for a day, ask us after lunch how we get our nutrition — we'll be delighted to answer you!
